In the 1950's the UK was getting over a World War and men got married in their early 20's to women a couple of years younger. I generalise, of course.
Women got engaged around the age of 18 and married about the age of 21. They may have carried on working as secretaries, nurses, teachers etc. for a while and then when they became pregnant, they gave in their notice and became stay-at-home mums.
The men worked full time and earned more than women. The women stayed home and kept house with the new labour saving devices and had children, only returning to work part time when the children started Junior school.
Was life better then?....please leave your comments....
